Tin Can Bay – Dolphin Feeding

Tin Can Bay is the home of the Australian Humpback Dolphin, they have 9 dolphins that regularly come into the bay, they all have names and are distinguished by the different sizes, markings and personalities of the dolphins. Their names are; Mystique, Patch, Ella, Squirt, Harmony, Aussie, Valentine, Chompy and White Fin. When I was there we had 5 come in for a feed.

They are quite strict about what you can feed them and how; which honestly is a fantastic practice. It shows that the dolphins health and safety are of the highest priority.**

So, I've been before and knew that although they open at 7am that you want to get there a bit earlier to get in line, but being the off season, I wasn't too worried (during school holidays however... plan more time), I showed up a bit before 7am, they were still waiting for the dolphins to come in anyway, so I had a lovely chat with one of the volunteers, he was telling me all about the different dolphins and how wonderful it is to be able to "work" with them!

It's $10 to view the dolphins and an additional $5 for a fish to feed them. You grab your voucher on the way in, and wait for them to ask everyone to start lining up, when it is your turn you get to go down into the water -- depending on the tides you could either be ankle deep or waist deep, please keep this in mind when you are getting dressed in the morning! Once you're there one of the volunteers will hand you a fish and explain how to hold it out and feed them, and then you do! It's amazing really. They are very gentle, yet massive creatures.

Unfortunately due to the amount of people they have coming through most days you do get quite rushed through and don't get to spend much time in the water, so make sure any cameras are ready before you head down.

Once each dolphin is down to 1 fish, they are fed the the last one at the same time, and are sent off for the day.

It's such an awesome thing to be able to experience. The volunteers are so lovely, and I am really appreciative of the work they do and the time they put in, no matter if it is summer or winter, they are there in the chilly water.

If you are on your way to K'gari, or Rainbow beach, be sure to stop in for an unforgettable morning!
